For months, I excitedly looked forward to La Gente's 17th annual Supershow. A longstanding tradition for both the Imperial Valley and Southern California's lowrider community, La Gente's Supershow draws many car clubs and enthusiasts from across the region. After receiving an all-access pass from my uncle, and securing a Panasonic DVX100b from a generous friend, I was ready to tackle my first video project.
The weekend of the car show was a hectic one. I spent the day before working as a PA on an 18 hour commercial shoot. I got to my Echo Park apartment around midnight, showered, then got on the road. I made it to El Centro around 4am, getting to bed around 5. I woke up the day of the show at 8am, and met my cousin at the IV Expo, where the event took place.
It was great seeing all the clubs setting up the beautiful cars, bombs, trucks, and bikes. My cousin and I would spend the day figuring out things as we went along. We sort of clumsily got footage of rides, as well as filming some of the main events of the day.
The end result wasn't all that spectacular, since we were figuring things out. But I don't think it was too bad either. I used(and learned) Adobe Premiere, and ended up whittling down three mini-dv tapes to a 5 minute video. I then cut even more to make it a 1 and half minute video. Not nearly as comprehensive a video as I had planned on, but it ended up making for a great learning experience. I definitely learned from my mistakes, and can't wait until the next one!
